"There is a common belief that we need to revise how we do foreign assistance, and new, dynamic partnerships with the private sector need to be an integral part of that. "

Presidential leadership

"To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and let clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds. And to those nations like ours that enjoy relative plenty, we say we can no longer afford indifference to suffering outside our borders."

-President Obama, Inaugural Address, January 20, 2009

IGD believes in the promise of reducing global poverty, and praises President Obama for his pledge to fight poverty around the world.

U.S. leadership is essential in the fight against global poverty and presidential commitment and initiative are critical components of that leadership. IGD seeks to elevate the importance of a U.S. commitment to reducing global poverty and urges the president to champion poverty reduction as a top priority.

IGD's platform for a new global development agenda outlines our recommendations in the areas of aid, trade and economic development and makes the case for vigorous presidential leadership to combat global poverty. Written during the 2008 presidential campaign, the platform demonstrates a business voice for poverty reduction and supports our outreach to Congress and our effort to build strong relationships between IGD partners and their congressional representatives.
